Things to do: Taupo is famous for it's outdoor activities. A gateway to the north, south, east & west of the North Island, makes this beautiful lakeside town a lively holiday spot year round for both New Zealanders and international visitors alike. With the largest lake in the southern hemisphere and surrounded by the the dual world heritage listed Tongariro National Park there is no shortage of of things to do ! Popular activities include, fishing, boat cruises and water sports & excursions on both the lake and rivers. Sky diving, bungy jumping, jet boating, rafting, kayaking, paragliding, mountain bike rides, geothermal walks, natural hot water swimming spots and golf are enjoyed year round. Winter skiing and snowboarding is an easy 1 1/2 hour drive away on Mt Ruapehu's Whakapapa skifield. Excursions to the world famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing (NZ's best 1 day walk) are available for pickup and drop off at the motel's front door.
